As in most societies, there are different types of women in Russia with different attitudes. Some of them are traditional - some are not. Let me give you a reasonable description of a traditional woman: The main things that separate her from a modern, "emancipated" woman are her priorities and values, which are dominantly oriented towards family, husband and children. She is generally free of egoism and ready without hesitation to give up her career and devote her life to her family. She will not view this as a sacrifice, but as a labour of love. And, she will not hesitate in making this decision. If needed, she will work her fingers to the bone in times of hardship. A traditional woman is somewhat old-fashioned in her attitudes and moral values. She is unwaveringly loyal, patient and forgiving, but intolerant to liberal, moral conceptions of living. She will not accept betrayal, lies and double standards of morality. She is stern with herself and her family with regard to these prerequisite standards.

A traditional woman is strong and proud. She doesn't need a man to depend on for financial survival. But, she does not want to live her life alone - a life without a family. More than anything, she wants with all her heart to be a wife and mother. She believes that this is her natural mission and destiny in life. Nothing is more important than the well-being of her family. She will feel happy and successful only if everything is well and secure in her home. She is not envious of career women and she will never regret her choice of family over career. Her decision comes not from weakness, but from her strong will, wisdom and common sense about what is most important for her family.

There are not many traditional women in these times. It is becoming more difficult to meet them in America and other western countries where many of the women (men, also) are becoming more self-centred and often narcissistic. Even in Russia, the numbers of traditional women are in decline. For someone not possessing a deep understanding of Russians, it is a difficult task to really know which ones are and which ones are not. If asked, the majority of Russian girls will tell you that they are traditional. But, unfortunately, only few of them will, in reality, be traditional. Some of them will lie, some will probably not realize, themselves, what it really means to be traditional. It takes a detailed knowledge and understanding of the Russian character and culture to identify a truly traditional Russian woman.

You can, for the larger part, deal with non-traditional Russian women in the same basic manner as with American and Western European women. All the rules that are beneficial to your relations with traditional Russian women will not likely help you and can easily make you vulnerable in attempting to apply those traditional rules to non-traditional Russian women.

If you are fortunate enough to meet a truly traditional Russian woman and you are going to Russia to visit her for the first time, here is some advice for you:

Never try to impress a traditional Russian lady with your money or material possessions. Don't describe or show pictures of your house, boat or other material wealth. Don't talk about your money. It is appropriate, as the situation dictates, to state that you are financially stable with a secure employment position or profession (all ladies everywhere like to feel some sense of security). If you dwell on material wealth, she will feel uncomfortable and think that you are trying to buy her. A traditional Russian woman, aside from an understandable desire for some security, is looking for your heart and soul. And, she needs to be needed. You will only gain entrance to her heart if you humbly share with her your problems, pains and loneliness. Be humble and honest about yourself. She's looking for sincerity, honesty and loyalty.

Consider taking modest or inexpensive luggage and avoid dressing in ultra-expensive clothing or jewellery while in Russia. Don't advertise the idea that you represent a potentially profitable target. Dress modest but tastefully. Although most Russian women can ill afford to actually purchase the latest fashion, they do keep up with trends and have very good taste. They will appreciate your tasteful appearance. Don't wear very bright clothes in Russia! Bright green, red and yellow, for instance, are considered loud and tasteless. The best colour choices for clothing are pastels and earth tones. Also, wearing shorts in Russia is very inappropriate. Although a very small number of Russians do wear shorts, this kind of clothing in public is considered to be in bad taste. You can wear comfortable, casual clothes during the day. It is appropriate to wear a suit and tie to restaurants and the theatre. Usually, there are wardrobe checks. Check your pockets before you check your coat. If you leave money, documents or keys in your pockets, they can be stolen. While attending a movie or theatre in Russia, you are not allowed to drink or eat during the performance.

Although standards are rapidly improving in tourist areas, the quality of food in many Russian restaurants is still not very good. The food portions are small and the prices are typically high. A modest dinner for two can cost as little as $25 or as high as $200 and up. It's very easy for an unwary traveller to unwittingly wind up in a restaurant at the higher end. Also, many restaurants in Russia are favourite hangouts for the New Russians. Seek advice and referrals and choose a restaurant with a good reputation and prices that fit your budget. Many Russian restaurants play loud music. Often, there are drunken people in these restaurants that can be rude and aggressive. Never allow anybody to involve you in a conflict. This is a strange country for you with strange customs. If you find yourself in a compromising position, quickly but politely pay your bill and leave. If you prefer, many U.S. restaurant chains have established their eateries in the most popular destinations such as Moscow and St. Petersburg. Note on tipping: Tipping is not a custom in Russia. But, in cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg, international norms are becoming more accepted. Take the time to decide where you are going to dine out and ask for advice from your interpreter or host.

Especially if your Russian lady is from a provincial area of Russia, she may not be experienced in dining out (and, especially with a foreigner). Encourage her to choose the meal she really likes. If she is a traditional lady, she will probably try to order the cheapest food or even say that she is not hungry. If she refuses to order food, do it yourself. She will overcome her shyness and eat. Be very patient with her. Dining in restaurants had been a cultural norm, but economic conditions of the last several years have crippled the ability of some Russians to afford this experience. It is often said that Russia is a land of paradoxes. Doctors can have a lower income than street sweepers. Some of Russia's most educated, cultured families afford to dine out.

Never ever allow your lady to go home in a taxi alone. It is not safe. I recommend that you do not use a taxi alone, either. There are too many cases of robbery and even murder connected with taxis in Russia. Public transportation in Moscow and St. Petersburg is very good. But, try not to travel during rush hours (7-8 a.m. and 6-7 p.m.). Buses and Metro (underground rail) are overcrowded during these hours. Note: Always offer your seat on public transportation to elderly passengers, women and small children.

Ask your lady what she would like to have - ice cream, sweets or other snacks - when you are walking in the city. She will appreciate your thoughtfulness. You will impress her if you buy her a bright balloon, a stuffed animal or a single rose. This will demonstrate affectionate attention. Sincere girls really do appreciate the little things. A sincere girl will almost never gravitate to the purchase of expensive merchandise, pricey restaurants or other items. If your date does this, take it as a warning. Note: Never buy flowers in even numbers. Always buy them in odd numbers.

Russian women have such strong intuition and "internal vision" that they can love a man just for his soul and heart. That it spiritual love, and it is the highest love that one could hope to achieve. The traditional Russian woman who will love you will not love you for your bedroom eyes, your sexy butt, or your strong physique. She will love you for who you are, unconditionally. She will help you to see yourself in a different way -- the way you were conceived and made by your Creator.

Where has this post been hiding?

I see this as a valuable introduction for anybody that is considering their first trip to the FSU.

Point - 1

It is my opinion that many FSU women that were born before or during the 1980's will fit the bill of the "Traditional Woman".

Of course those individuals will no longer fall into the category of "arm candy", but then as I see it the majority of "arm candy" relationships are more or less doomed.

Point - 2

OK, I do accept that some of the information is a bit dated but then it would be up to a newbie to ask the relevant questions regarding the Original Article.

I will agree with Raffy, that the article is dated, but still contains a few really good nuggets of truth. I thought the first two paragraphs were exceptionally accurate in describing a traditional Russian women as I have several conversations with Natasha where she talks about how people have discussions in America about wanting children as she says it never happens in Russia as it's expected you will have family. She's also willing to give up a very good career as she mentions that family is a priority at this time of her life.

Related to wealth, I also remember her saying that she would delete a mans profile if he had pictures of himself with a car or boat. What the article did not mention (maybe I missed it) was how much they value an educated and cultured man.

The part about there not being many good restaurants in Russia is out-of-date or the fact that Russians don't have experience to dine out (even in the provinces). Toss this out and don't be surprised when your FSUW comes to your country that she might stick her nose up at our fast food culture. Things are much different now...

Related to taxis, one important consideration is that often Russians hail cars at any street corner and more often than not, they are just men stopping and trying to make a little extra money. Lets call them Gypsy taxis and these are the ones to be leery of, but now you can find reputable taxi companies in all cities and you'll probably notice that your lady will order them ahead as these are like taxi companies in the west and are safe...

I think that is the most important priority and aim in any relationship and you can't achieve it by having a short time 1-2 visits, then asking to marry her and hope that real love will come later.

In my view and after the initial lust, it takes nearly a year before both get to know each other well and the love feelings to develop thus creating the long term foundations of a happy relationship.

I never understood how people expected to fall in "LOVE" after meeting a woman for short 1-2 trips and get married to her so quickly. I am maybe of the old school, due to my age, but you don't get married to a local woman so quickly, so why make a quick decision to marry an FSU woman?
